Ulrich Schmid-Maybach represents the fourth generation of the family business started by his great grandfather, Wilhelm Maybach, who designed the first Mercedes in 1901. Mr. Maybach’s grandfather, Karl Maybach, created diesel engines which have been installed in railcars, ships and stationary plants for 100 years now. His gasoline engines powered airships, aircraft and the famous Maybach automobiles of the 1920s and 30s. Inspired by his great grandfather’s humble origins as an orphan in 1850’s Germany, Mr. Maybach launched the Maybach Foundation in 2006 at the United Nations with the mission to mentor talent in adversity to effect positive social change, and as strategic charitable partner to the Maybach automotive brand.

Through the Foundation’s work alongside the Maybach Stiftung, a sister organization located in Germany, new projects are emerging to capture and share the unique Maybach history with today’s audiences.
The Foundation and Stiftung are collaborating to create pathways to an enhanced collection of archival information and educate audiences on using the past to spark new ingenuity and develop paradigms for the challenges of today.
