Ulrich Schmid-Maybach’s grandfather Karl Maybach created diesel engines that have been installed in railcars, ships and stationary plants for over 100 years. His diesel engines powered Zeppelin airships, aircraft and the famous Maybach automobiles of the 1920s and 30s. Karl’s father Wilhelm Maybach had spent his youth as an orphan in the Reutlingen Bruderhaus before he later was crowned “King of Designers”. Inspired by this story, Ulrich Schmid-Maybach founded the Maybach Foundation in 2006 and the German Maybach Stiftung in 2007.

The Maybach Foundation/Stiftung Team
The Maybach Foundation/Stiftung was founded in 2006/2007 with the aim of honoring the legacy of the two great designers Wilhelm and Karl Maybach and connecting people all over the world with the Maybach values of innovation and talent development through mentoring. The two foundations (Germany & US) are working together to capture the unique Maybach history and share it with today’s public. To this end, they cooperate in museum-related and educational projects that aim at utilizing the past to create a new spirit of inventiveness and develop paradigms for the challenges of today.
